The University of California San Diego (UCSD) initially specified integral color cast-in-place concrete walls with a sandblast finish for its upcoming housing development. However, upon evaluating the costs, the project exceeded the budget.
To address this, Boulderscape proposed an alternative: utilizing shotcrete to construct the walls, followed by the application of a specialized exposed sand finish that would align with the aesthetic criteria set by UCSD architects.Additionally, Boulderscape developed a new finish named the "River Wash" finish, designed to mimic the stratification found within riverbed walls.
Boulderscape constructed several mock-ups showcasing both the exposed sand finish and the strata finishes. Following evaluations, the "E250 Exposed" finish and the "River Wash" finish received approval. The walls, varying in thickness from 8" to 14", spanned the entire housing complex, covering a total area of 72,830 square feet.
This approach not only brought the project within budget but also provided the desired aesthetic, demonstrating the effectiveness of innovative construction techniques in large-scale developments.
