A new soldier pile retaining wall was constructed to support a Wyoming high school expansion. Because the wall was located adjacent to existing campus buildings, the project architect wanted the architectural finish to match the masonry used throughout the school. Boulderscape's Stippled Block finish was selected to provide a seamless transition between the new retaining wall and the existing architecture.
Boulderscape hand sculpted the Stippled Block finish across the entire wall surface, carefully matching the size, texture, and appearance of the existing block used throughout the campus. The finished wall complemented the surrounding buildings while providing the structural performance required for the site.
The project encompassed 9,300 square feet of wall surface consisting of a 12" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 2" thick architectural relief over a soldier pile wall system using a 5,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 5 days, delivering a durable retaining wall solution that integrated seamlessly with the architectural character of the school. 37% under traditional cast in place construction. 8%-10% air was needed to help reduce chances of cracking in winter. Hydration stabilizers were used to maintain concrete temperature and extend the finishing time.
