For a Target development in Connecticut, the owner sought a clean architectural retaining wall featuring a large format 1/2 Running Bond Block pattern. While the original concept called for cast in place construction, the associated cost and schedule impacts led the project team to pursue a more efficient alternative.
Boulderscape constructed the wall using structural shotcrete and hand sculpted a Class A 1/2 Running Bond Block finish to replicate the appearance of traditional masonry construction. The finish provided the bold architectural character envisioned by the design team while taking advantage of the speed and flexibility of shotcrete construction.
The project encompassed 11,395 square feet of wall surface consisting of a 12" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 2" thick architectural relief over a soldier pile wall system using a 5,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 6 days, delivering a durable retaining wall solution that achieved the project's architectural objectives while maintaining an efficient construction schedule.
