To transform a series of existing cast in place retaining walls in Strongsville, Ohio, Boulderscape developed a structural shotcrete facing system that would provide both long term durability and a natural rock appearance. The existing walls were prepared by drilling and epoxying dowels into the concrete substrate and installing heavy wire mesh reinforcement to mechanically connect the new facing to the original structure.
Once reinforcement was complete, Boulderscape placed the structural shotcrete section and applied a hand sculpted Strongsville Shale finish designed to replicate the layered textures and natural character of local rock formations. The new facing transformed the appearance of the existing walls while extending their service life and improving their architectural appeal.
The project encompassed 19,000 square feet of wall surface consisting of a 6" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 2" thick architectural relief over an existing cast in place wall using a 4,500 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 8 days, delivering a durable structural and architectural wall facing system with minimal disruption to the site.
