The City of Solana Beach constructed several soil nail walls as part of the development of its new train station. Because the retaining walls would frame both the northbound and southbound rail lines, the City wanted an architectural finish that reflected the coastal character of the community and created an attractive gateway for rail passengers. Boulderscape's San Diego Sandstone finish was selected for the project.
Boulderscape hand sculpted the San Diego Sandstone finish across the entire wall surface, incorporating natural strata, fractures, and sandstone textures inspired by the local geology. The architectural finish transformed the retaining walls into a natural extension of the surrounding landscape while enhancing the appearance of one of the community's most visible public facilities.
The project encompassed 64,300 square feet of wall surface consisting of an 8" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 2" thick architectural relief over a soil nail wall system using a 5,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 19 days, delivering a durable retaining wall solution that complemented the architectural character of the station. 38% under traditional cast in place construction.
