To stabilize a series of steepened slopes along the 91 Freeway in Corona, California, Caltrans designed multiple soil nail walls to reduce the risk of future slope failures. Because the project was highly visible to the traveling public, both Caltrans and the City of Corona placed a strong emphasis on aesthetics, requiring the walls to blend naturally with the surrounding landscape while maintaining an attractive appearance for motorists.
Boulderscape developed and installed its Corona Granite finish across 49,240 square feet of wall surface. The hand sculpted finish was stained using a light earth color palette designed to complement the surrounding hillside and minimize the visual impact of the retaining walls.
The project consisted of a 16" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 4" thick architectural relief over a soil nail wall system using a 4,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in 24 days, resulting in a durable slope stabilization system that integrated seamlessly into the surrounding environment while preserving the natural character of the corridor.
