A new retaining wall was required to support a segment of Route 7 in Brookfield, Connecticut. While the original design called for a cast in place concrete wall, CDOT selected an architectural shotcrete alternative that offered greater flexibility while providing a more natural appearance for the corridor.
Boulderscape developed and installed its Brookfield Granite finish, a hand sculpted architectural treatment inspired by the basalt formations found throughout the region. The finish was designed to replicate the texture, relief, and character of natural stone, allowing the retaining wall to blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape while maintaining the structural performance required for the highway expansion.
The project encompassed 21,800 square feet of wall surface consisting of a 12" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 3" thick architectural relief over a rock bolt stabilization system using a 5,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 8 days, delivering a durable retaining wall solution that combined long term structural performance with a natural rock appearance.
