A coastal bluff below a private oceanfront residence required stabilization to protect the home from continued erosion. A soil nail wall system was selected to reinforce the slope, and because the project was located within a sensitive coastal environment, the California Coastal Commission required an architectural finish that closely matched the surrounding conglomerate geology. Boulderscape's Laguna Breccia finish was approved for the project.
Boulderscape hand sculpted the Laguna Breccia finish across the entire wall surface, replicating the textures, relief, and character of the native coastal bluff. To further enhance realism, locally sourced rock was carefully sorted, cleaned, and embedded directly into the shotcrete face, creating a seamless transition between the engineered retaining wall and the surrounding natural landscape.
The project encompassed 2,877 square feet of wall surface consisting of a 10" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 3" thick architectural relief over a soil nail wall system using a 5,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 5 days, delivering a durable bluff stabilization solution that blended naturally into the surrounding coastline. 35% under traditional cast in place construction.
