A perimeter soil nail wall was constructed to support the new parking structure at Portneuf Hospital. Because portions of the retaining wall would remain visible through the structure's light wells, the architect wanted the exposed wall to resemble natural rock rather than a conventional concrete retaining wall. Boulderscape's Connecticut Granite finish was selected to achieve the desired appearance.
Boulderscape hand sculpted the Connecticut Granite finish across the entire wall surface, incorporating natural fractures, relief, and rock textures inspired by native granite formations. A medium earth stain was applied to create realistic color variation and provide the appearance of weathered natural stone when viewed from within the parking structure.
The project encompassed 10,340 square feet of wall surface consisting of an 8" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 3" thick architectural relief over a soil nail wall system using a 4,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 7 days, delivering a durable retaining wall solution that enhanced the architectural character of the parking structure. 37% under traditional cast in place construction.
