Pocono Raceway sought a bold new appearance for the entrance and exit to its racetrack, including a cascading water feature, rock shoring walls, structural and architectural tunnel lining, and custom rockwork. Working during the winter off season while the track was closed, Boulderscape was selected to construct and sculpt the entire project using its Pocono Granite finish stained in a Midtown Gray color blend.
The project combined structural shotcrete construction with highly detailed architectural rockwork to create a cohesive gateway experience for visitors entering and leaving the facility. From the water feature and rock walls to the tunnel lining and custom rock formations, every element was designed to complement the character of the raceway while providing long term durability.
The project encompassed 17,348 square feet of wall surface consisting of a 12" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 3" thick architectural relief over a soil nail wall system using a 5,500 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 17 days, allowing the transformation to be finished before the raceway reopened for the season. 8%-10% air was needed to help reduce chances of cracking in winter. Hydration stabilizers were used to maintain concrete temperature and extend the finishing time. Crystalline waterproofing was used in the water feature creation. Silica Fume was used in all overhead shotcrete work.
