A retaining wall with significant surface undulations presented a unique challenge during the development of this Norwalk project. The owner was concerned that the irregular wall face would make it difficult to achieve an attractive architectural finish. Boulderscape recognized the opportunity to use the natural contours of the wall as part of the final design rather than attempting to conceal them.
Boulderscape hand sculpted its Norwalk Granite finish across the entire wall surface, incorporating the existing undulations into the geological design along with carefully placed fractures, ledges, and natural rock textures. The result was a more realistic and dynamic rock formation that closely replicated the appearance of native granite outcrops while taking full advantage of the wall's natural contours.
The project encompassed 10,488 square feet of wall surface consisting of a 12" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 3" thick architectural relief over a soil nail wall system using a 5,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 5 days, delivering a durable retaining wall solution that blended naturally into the surrounding environment. 47% under traditional cast in place construction.
