To expand the turnaround area of a runway, Charlotte Airport required a large soil nail wall to retain the adjacent slope. The original design called for a cast in place concrete facing, but Boulderscape proposed a value engineered shotcrete alternative that reduced construction complexity while maintaining the project's structural and architectural requirements.
Boulderscape constructed the wall using structural shotcrete and applied its Charlotte Ashlar architectural finish to create a clean, durable appearance consistent with the airport environment. The sculpted shotcrete approach accelerated construction while providing a cost effective alternative to traditional cast in place methods.
The project encompassed 8,350 square feet of wall surface consisting of an 8" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 2" thick architectural relief over a soil nail wall system using a 5,000 PSI mix design.
