Two existing soldier pile walls in Newport required a structural and architectural facing that would provide long term durability while complementing the surrounding environment. Boulderscape proposed its bedded Limestone Shale finish, a hand sculpted architectural treatment designed to replicate the layered appearance and natural texture of sedimentary rock formations. The finish was selected for its ability to transform the walls into an attractive landscape feature while maintaining the structural performance required by the project.
Boulderscape installed the structural shotcrete facing and hand sculpted the architectural finish across 15,443 square feet of wall surface. To enhance long term durability, a crystalline integral waterproofing admixture was incorporated into the shotcrete mix to reduce moisture migration through the capillary structure of the concrete.
The project consisted of a 10" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 3" thick architectural relief over a soldier pile wall system using a 4,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 8 days, delivering a durable retaining wall solution that combined structural performance, moisture protection, and architectural appeal.
