The Montage Hotel required improvements to two separate retaining structures along its oceanfront property. An existing World War II era Marine wall needed to be raised in height, while a new soil nail wall was constructed to support a hillside and beachfront pedestrian pathway. The project goal was to visually unify both structures and blend them into the surrounding coastal environment.
To achieve this, Boulderscape developed and installed its Laguna Breccia finish across the entire wall system. The hand sculpted finish was designed to replicate the fractured textures, layering, and natural character of the coastal rock formations found throughout Laguna Beach. A custom light earth stain was applied to further integrate the walls into the surrounding landscape and create the appearance of a continuous natural rock outcrop descending toward the shoreline.
The project encompassed 6,830 square feet of wall surface consisting of an 8" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 5" thick architectural relief over a soil nail wall system using a 5,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 5 days, delivering a durable retaining wall solution that combined slope stabilization, coastal durability, and architectural integration with the surrounding bluff environment. Hydration stabilizers were used to maintain concrete temperature and extend the finishing time. Corrosion inhibitors were used to protect the steel. Integral color was used to preserve the color after heavy wave action.
