Kansas DOT required stabilization of a failing roadside slope along Maplewood Parkway while preserving the natural appearance of the surrounding landscape. The retaining wall needed to follow the contours of the existing bluff and blend seamlessly into the adjacent hillside. A soil nail wall system paired with Boulderscape's Ridgefield Shale finish was selected to achieve both the structural and architectural objectives of the project.
Boulderscape hand sculpted the Ridgefield Shale finish across the entire wall surface, incorporating layered rock textures, natural fractures, and relief inspired by the surrounding geology. A medium earth stain was applied to complement the native soils and create a seamless transition between the engineered retaining wall and the existing bluff.
The project encompassed 6,760 square feet of wall surface consisting of an 8" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 3" thick architectural relief over a soil nail wall system using a 4,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 4 days, delivering a durable slope stabilization solution that blended naturally into the surrounding environment. 35% under traditional cast in place construction.
