As part of a multi exhibit expansion at the Los Angeles Zoo, Boulderscape helped create five immersive animal habitats including Oak Woodland Pond, Alligator Swamp, Damp Forest, Bite and Squeeze, and Behind the Glass. Each environment was designed to replicate the natural habitat of its featured species through detailed sculpted shotcrete and themed architectural elements.
Boulderscape fabricated and installed a wide range of features including rock formations, ponds, trees, root systems, mud banks, and other habitat components. Many elements were constructed in Boulderscape's fabrication facility before being transported and installed on site, while others were sculpted directly in place. All features were finished using integral color and environmentally friendly topical stains to create realistic textures and natural color variation.
The project encompassed 11,230 square feet of themed construction consisting of structural shotcrete sections ranging from 6" thick to 24" thick with an average 10" thick architectural relief using a 6,000 PSI mix design. The entire installation was backed by a 10 year warranty, providing the owner with long term confidence in the durability and performance of the finished exhibits.
