When the architect for the I-5 freeway walls in Encinitas sought a finish that would provide the community with a distinct visual identity, Boulderscape collaborated in the development of an entirely new architectural treatment known as the Wave finish. Installed over a soil nail wall supporting the freeway, the design features deep sculpted grooves that create the appearance of a rolling wave, with bands of Corten steel integrated between elevations to cast changing shadows throughout the day. As the Corten steel naturally weathers, it introduces warm earth tones that continue to enhance the appearance of the wall over time.
The project encompassed 29,900 square feet of wall surface consisting of a 14" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 3" thick architectural relief over a soil nail wall system using a 4,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 23 days, delivering a durable architectural retaining wall that combines structural performance with a unique and evolving visual character. Installed the 12” thick structural shotcrete, embedment shotcrete, and the 2” - 14” thick wave groove finish with integral color. Stained 16,800 SF of the I-5 underside bridge deck.
