For San Diego’s I-15 transit station, Boulderscape hand-sculpted an artistic Blowing Leaves motif the form-liner budget couldn’t reach — finishing 9,300 square feet of architectural shotcrete, delivered in 8 days at 43% below the original option.

The City of San Diego approved an artistic Blowing Leaves motif for the new I 15 terminal station as a defining architectural feature of the project. The original design called for the pattern to be constructed using form liners, but the cost exceeded the available budget. Boulderscape proposed a hand sculpted shotcrete alternative that preserved the City's design intent while providing a more economical solution.
Boulderscape hand sculpted the Blowing Leaves motif across the entire retaining wall, carefully carving each leaf into the shotcrete surface to create depth, movement, and visual interest. A custom autumn color palette was applied to enhance the artistic design and create a distinctive architectural feature that reflected the City's original vision.
The project encompassed 9,300 square feet of wall surface consisting of a 12" thick to 16" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 4" thick architectural relief over a soldier pile wall system using a 5,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 8 days, delivering a durable architectural retaining wall that achieved the City's design objectives. 43% under traditional cast in place construction.
