UDOT originally specified a cast in place architectural finish for this retaining wall in Moab. During the mockup phase, Boulderscape presented its hand sculpted Moab Sandstone finish alongside the specified finish, allowing the project team to compare both options under actual field conditions. After reviewing the mockups, UDOT selected the Moab Sandstone finish for the project.
Boulderscape hand sculpted the Moab Sandstone finish across the entire wall surface, replicating the layered textures and weathered appearance of the region's iconic red rock formations. A custom integral base color was incorporated into the shotcrete mix, while darker accent colors were applied within the natural fractures and joints to create additional depth and realism.
The project encompassed 7,420 square feet of wall surface consisting of an 8" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 3" thick architectural relief over a soil nail wall system using a 4,500 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 4 days, delivering a durable slope stabilization solution that blended naturally into the surrounding landscape. 37% under traditional cast in place construction.
