Caltrans required a newly constructed soil nail wall along Hecker Pass to blend naturally with the surrounding landscape and reflect the character of the area's native geology. Boulderscape developed a series of full scale on site mockups to evaluate various architectural concepts. After review, Caltrans selected the Vista Ashlar finish for the project.
Boulderscape hand sculpted the Vista Ashlar finish across the entire wall surface, creating a natural stone appearance inspired by the regional geology. A custom Mission Brown stain was applied to complement the surrounding terrain and provide natural color variation throughout the wall.
The project encompassed 46,491 square feet of wall surface consisting of an 8" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 2" thick architectural relief over a soil nail wall system using a 4,500 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 16 days, delivering a durable slope stabilization solution that blended seamlessly into the surrounding environment.
