On a private oceanfront estate in Corona del Mar, a previous bluff rehabilitation effort had left large portions of the slope covered with exposed concrete repairs that contrasted sharply with the surrounding coastal landscape. The owner sought a solution that would restore the natural appearance of the bluff while providing long term durability in the harsh marine environment.
Boulderscape developed a hand sculpted shale finish designed to replicate the exposed sedimentary layers found throughout the coastal bluffs of Southern California. Each strata line was individually carved by hand to mirror the natural curves, contours, and weathering patterns of the surrounding geology. A custom golden shale stain was then applied to blend the repaired areas seamlessly into the existing bluff face.
The project encompassed 2,210 square feet of wall surface consisting of a 4" thick structural shotcrete section with an average 2" thick architectural relief over an existing cast wall using a 4,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 3 days, restoring the bluff to a natural appearance while providing long term protection against coastal erosion and weathering.
