A large retaining wall near the entrance to Charlotte Airport was originally designed as a cast in place structure. As the design developed, the size and complexity of the embedded bracing plates and cross members made conventional forming increasingly difficult and labor intensive. To overcome these challenges, Boulderscape
proposed a structural shotcrete solution that simplified construction while accelerating the schedule. Working within a temperature controlled enclosure, Boulderscape encased the large structural steel components, including 24" bracket plates, with structural shotcrete and finished all exposed surfaces to a Class A steel trowel finish. The shotcrete method allowed the complex geometry of the wall to be constructed efficiently while maintaining the high quality finish required for this highly visible airport location.
The project encompassed 8,550 square feet of wall surface consisting of a 16" thick structural shotcrete section over a lagging wall system using a 6,000 PSI mix design. The entire scope was completed in just 6 days, delivering a durable structural retaining wall capable of accommodating the project's complex embedded steel framework. Boulderscape installed all control wires, 16” thick structural shotcrete around 24” x 24” structural bracket plates and finished all work with a class A steel trowel finish. All work was shot within a temperature controlled heated tent.
